Why authors don't make money - a lighthearted glimpse into the writing industry

There is a perception out there that authors are always broke, that we are always struggling to make ends meet and are romantically starving in a freezing cold garret. (Who even has a garret nowadays?) Whilst it's true that best sellers are rare and multi-million dollar authors even rarer, I have uncovered the main reason we don't make any money. We are just too busy!

  1. We're too busy writing to do the boring stuff like marketing and self-promotion.

  2. We're too busy reading, constantly getting lost in the latest pile of books we have bought.

  3. We're too busy drinking coffee and eating chocolate biscuits, waiting for inspiration. These are essential tools for the writing process, and without them, we would surely become the prophesied starving artist.

  4. We're too busy correcting grammar and punctuation on other people's social media posts. After all, it's our duty as writers to make sure the world is a grammatically correct place, even if it means sacrificing our own financial stability and most of our friends.

So there you have it. The real reasons why authors don't make any money. But don't let that discourage you from pursuing your passion. After all, writing isn't about the money, it's about the love of the craft. And if you're lucky, you might even make enough to buy a latte and a packet of chocolate biscuits!
